Impact of Industry 4.0 on Organizational Sustainability: The Moderating Role of Organizational Readiness for Technology Adoption

Abstract

The world is increasingly concerned about climate change, the lack of resources, and social responsibility, matching digital transformation with sustainability is becoming a priority of contemporary organizations. This conceptual article discusses the interdependence which exists between Industry 4.0 technologies and sustainability performance and highlights organizational readiness as a moderating factor. Based upon the knowledge of the sustainability theory and organizational capability frameworks, the paper argues that the implementation of Industry 4.0 can enhance environmental, social, and economic performance under the high level of internal readiness. It further proposes a reverse-causality perspective: that sustainability goals can themselves act as drivers of Industry 4.0 adoption, rather than merely as outcomes.  By integrating these two directions of influence into a single theoretical framework, the study contributes a novel model for the digital-sustainability nexus and offers researchers a foundation for future empirical work.
